Types of Propane Cylinders and Sizes We Carry
Propane cylinders, known to most as propane tanks, are the most common class of gas containers. Tanks come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from 1,000-gallon tanks that can power and heat large homes to the standard 20lb tanks that fuel grills, generators, and patio heaters. At Owenhouse Ace Hardware, we carry a variety of cylinders and sizes and are happy to help you find the one that’s right for you.
Propane Cylinders and Sizes
- 16 oz cylinders: These lightweight and compact propane tanks are ideal for fueling camping stoves, lanterns, portable heaters, tabletop grills, and more.
- 20 lb cylinders: This upright cylinder is instantly recognizable as the popular choice for most residential uses. These tanks hold approximately five gallons of propane and can fuel a variety of applications, including gas grills and patio heaters.
- 30 lb cylinders: Measuring nearly two feet tall, 30lb tanks remain portable and suitable for outdoor residential use and hold approximately eight gallons of propane.
- 100 lb cylinders: For larger applications, such as indoor fireplaces and gas cooking ranges, these large cylinders hold roughly 25 gallons of propane.
Propane Tank Exchanges
Not every propane tank can be refilled. Tanks with 100 lbs or less capacity must be requalified within 10 years of their original manufacture date. You can find your tank’s manufacture date stamped on its collar in month/year format. If an “E” follows the date, this indicates it has been inspected and requalified for an additional five years. For example:
- A tank stamped “05/09” was manufactured in May 2009 and expires after 12 years, in May 2021.
- A tank stamped “05/08 E” was manufactured in May 2008 and due to expire in May 2020 but has been requalified for use until 2025.
If you’re unsure whether your tank can be refilled, don’t worry–the team at Owenhouse West can help. Before refilling your tank, we’ll inspect it to ensure it is safe, including checking the manufacturing date, requalification date, and other safety and compliance measures.
Many customers prefer to skip the steps above and, instead, exchange their old tank for a new one. Tank exchange is quick and convenient: instead of taking the time to inspect and refill your current tank, you can simply return it and receive a filled tank in return. Your new tank will be pre-filled and pre-inspected to ensure it hasn’t expired and meets all safety protocols, so you can just grab it and go.
