Start Seeds Indoors & Transplant Seedlings
Some plants need to be started indoors and then transplanted outside once the weather warms up. According to Cheryl Moore-Gough, retired Montana State University Extension horticulture specialist, many tender vegetables can’t mature in Bozeman’s short growing season. On average, we only have 112 frost-free days! That means starting those plants indoors is an important step when getting your garden going in Bozeman.
Some plants you really need to start indoors, while other hardier varieties can go straight in the ground. If you want cucumbers, you better start them indoors in May. Moore-Gough said she follows a June 1 planting date (about!) and six to eight weeks before planting is a good time to start cultivating veggies like peppers and tomatoes indoors.
