Map Out Your Garden Bed

Knowing where to plant things is important. Some plants work better together, like the three sisters – corn, beans, and squash. By mapping out your garden bed, you can make sure you’re planting everything in the right spot. It can be a fun activity to draw out a physical plan for your garden with good ol’ fashioned paper and pens! Having a visual before you start makes the actual gardening so much more efficient.

If you’re not sure what to plant or where to start, we can help you choose the best plants for your garden and give tips on where to plant them! Sometimes just walking through our garden aisle for some inspiration is all the help you need.

Weed out the Baddies

Starting fresh is important in gardening. That means getting rid of any weeds in your garden bed. Give your little veggies a fighting chance by eliminating the competition. Plus, it can be quite therapeutic to aggressively rip dandelions out of the ground with your bare hands. At Owenhouse Ace Hardware, we have a variety of weed control products to help you keep your garden bed weed-free!

Products we love:

Grandpas Weeder: A lightweight weed remover! Removes weeds without bending, pulling, or kneeling. You can find it down aisle 4 at the west location. Get directions to Owenhouse West now!

Start Seeds Indoors & Transplant Seedlings

Some plants need to be started indoors and then transplanted outside once the weather warms up. According to Cheryl Moore-Gough, retired Montana State University Extension horticulture specialist, many tender vegetables can’t mature in Bozeman’s short growing season. On average, we only have 112 frost-free days! That means starting those plants indoors is an important step when getting your garden going in Bozeman.

Some plants you really need to start indoors, while other hardier varieties can go straight in the ground. If you want cucumbers, you better start them indoors in May. But arugula and beets are good to go straight in the ground in May! Check out the Almanac for a detailed guide on every veggie and when to plant it!

Moore-Gough said she follows a June 1 planting date (about!) and six to eight weeks before planting is a good time to start cultivating veggies like peppers and tomatoes indoors.
