Tyler’s Top 4 Tips for Mastering the Tailgate BBQ
Tyler started grilling before he started walking, which is why he’s our in-house grilling expert! We trust this guy with grill demos, sharp knives, and fire… so you can trust him with these tailgating grilling tips.
Tyler’s Tip #1 Try Grilling Before!
True pitmasters know that resting the meat is crucial. Take advantage of this by smoking a pork butt the night before the game. Not only will this give you a head start, but you’ll also have people’s mouths watering with the best food outside the stadium.

Bonus Grilling Tip from Tyler:
Lots of websites provide cook times, but it is much better to rely on the color, temperature, and evaporation rate of the meat for the best results. If you are worried about timing, a general rule of thumb is that it will be close to one hour per pound of meat.
Tyler’s Tip #2 Dig into Easy Game Day Recipes
Sometimes, the best dishes are the simplest ones. Tyler recommends grilling some quick and easy appetizers like blackened Cheez-Its and hot dog burnt ends. It might sound kind of out there, but believe us, they are the perfect tailgate snack.
They’re great for munching while waiting for the main course and are super easy to prepare. Just throw them on the grill or smoker, and you’re good to go!
Tyler’s Tip #3 Use a BBQ Prep Bin
One of Tyler’s secrets to a smooth grilling experience is using a BBQ prep bin. The Drip Ez BBQ Prep Tub, available at Owenhouse, is a game-changer. “I use mine just about every time I cook meat. It saves on cleaning up and makes the cooking process much easier.”
The larger versions have a great built-in cutting board making prep, marinating, and cleanup easy. Great for larger meals, this XL tub will fit a full brisket or 2 (or more!) racks of ribs. Plus, it’s collapsible and dishwasher-safe.
Tyler’s Tip #4 Boost Flavor with a Smoker Tube
If you aren’t using a smoker, try using a smoking box or smoker tube to get those tantalizing smokey aromas rolling off your grill into your food. Smoker tubes will boost the flavor profile of your dish and tenderize the meat by breaking down fat content and ligaments.
Tyler recommends the A-MAZE-N Stainless Steel Tube Smoker because it’s a great size for any camping-size or medium grills and is available at Owenhouse!
